New Study: Lower Your Risk of Dying From Breast Cancer by 50% By Doing This One Simple Thing

Women with breast cancer who walk three to five hours a week are 50 percent less likely to die from the disease than inactive women with breast cancer.

According to Dr. Michelle Holmes, a Brigham & Women's Hospital researcher and the study's lead author, walking could mean the difference between life and death.

It appears that increased levels of physical activity lowers levels of circulating ovarian hormones (estrogen) potentially improving the chances of survival by reducing hormone levels and suppressing tumor growth and recurrence.

The study included nearly 3,000 women in the Nurses' Health Study who were diagnosed with breast cancer between 1984 and 1998.

The research team found that any amount of exercise -- even walking an hour a week -- helped promote breast cancer survival.

The findings appear in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
