Popular Breast Cancer Drug Found to Stimulate Tumor Growth

a According to new research conducted at the Malmo University Hospital, UMAS, in Sweden, the popular cancer drug, Tamoxifen, has been found to have the opposite effect on certain types of tumors.

According to lead reseacher, Karin Jirstroem, although tamoxifen has been found to be a very efficient treatment for most patients, the study shows that in 15 percent of tumors that contain the cell-splitting gene cyclin D1 tamoxifen the opposite effect appears to happen, stimulating tumor growth and the increased likelihood of a relapse.

The study conducted by Jirstroem and her colleagues was based on examinations of patients from southern Sweden who had been treated with the drug. It was recently published in the US medical journal Cancer Researcher.

"Our findings in Malmoe should immediately be tested in other studies to avoid negative effects of this otherwise very effective drug tamoxifen," he added.
