A new study confers with another major study conducted six years ago by Harvard and Ohio State universities that broccoli may be a powerful weapon against bladder cancer.
The study found men who ate two or more half-cup servings of broccoli per week had a 44 per cent lower incidence of bladder cancer compared to men who ate less than one serving each week.
According to the American Cancer Society, 63,000 people will be diagnosed with bladder cancer this year and 13,000 will die.
Researchers at Ohio State University reported at the recent IFT show in New Orleans that a compound found in broccoli called isothiocyanates hindered the growth of bladder cancer cells in the lab.
Isothiocyanates is made active during chopping, chewing and digestion.
The study revealed that isothiocyanates had the strongest effect on the most aggressive type of bladder cancer, human invasive transitional cell carcinoma.
