Could Your Granite Countertops Be Poisoning You?

Home owners especially are in love with granite, due to the way it looks, and the fact that it can be created to anybody's custom demands.
As their popularity has grown, so have the types of granite available. And along with increased sales volume and variety, there have been more reports of hot or potentially hazardous countertops, particularly among the more exotic varieties from Brazil and Namibia.
Granite countertops may actually be bad for your health, as research states that they contain high levels of radioactive uranium.
Calls to the Environmental Protection Agency have been increasing from radon inspectors, as well as consumed home owners over the levels of radiation in their countertops.
Allegations that granite countertops may emit dangerous levels of radon and radiation have been raised periodically over the past decade. Health physicists and radiation experts agree that most granite countertops emit radiation and radon at extremely low levels.
But with increasing regularity in recent months, the EPA has been receiving calls from radon inspectors and concerned homeowners about granite countertops with radiation measurements several times above background levels.
We have been hearing from people all over the country concerned about high readings, said Lou Witt, a program analyst with the agency's Indoor Environments Division.
As more and more attention is brought to this topic, one thing is for sure, fewer and fewer people will choose to invest in granite countertops for their homes.
Now what are your going to do about it?
