(CBS) CHICAGO The way children grow may be a more important risk factor for adult heart disease than body weight.

Researchers at the Oregon Health and Science University found that children who were born small, still thin at age 2, but who gained weight quickly after that were three times more likely to develop heart disease as adults.

That rapid weight gain may lead to development of more fat compared to muscle, resulting in heart problems later, according to the study in the "New England Journal of Medicine."
