According to a new study at the Institute of Cardiology in Modena, Italy, impotence may be an early warning of heart disease even in men who appear healthy.
Dr Emilio Chiurlia, the lead researcher, who made the discovery said erectile dysfunction (ED) should form part of a general assessment of heart disease risk.
The study involved 143 men with similar coronary risk factor scores, 70 of whom were impotent.
The men with erectile dysfunction had higher levels of C-reactive protein adn abnormal blood vessel responses to changes in blood flow which is associated with damaged arteries.
Dr Emilio Chiurlia also commented that erectile dysfunction represented the tip of the iceberg and has the potential to precede severe cardiovascular events.
The study suggest that patients with ED should be considered at high risk for coronary artery disease and should have high priority for aggressive treatment."
In addition to other heart markers like C-Reactive Protein, diabetes and increased waist measurement, ED may be considered an additional, early warning sign of coronary atherosclerosis.
